Physiotherapist explaining the treadmill assessment to a patient.

Running Technique Assessment

With this assessment you will have your running assessed on a treadmill via slow motion video. This is a great place to start to show general running traits that we can work on to improve your running form. We can cue your running to address adverse loading on a current injury, prevent injury or increase efficiency and speed.  During  this assessment we will also discuss your running practices such as volume and zone intensity in training as well as gather data from your running such as your cadence. All this information is considered for your bespoke running plan as no two runners will have the exact same running practices, biomechanics or running technique. Your experienced Sports Physiotherapist will identify how your injury or problem relates to what is seen in your slow motion video from the treadmill and referenced to data from your own watch data from outdoor runs. They will then be able to form a bespoke running rehab plan for you, coaching the various exercises and running technique alterations that you need on your return appointment.

This assessment provides essential coaching for anyone who is starting out running and is just looking to ensure they’re running in a way that is less likely to cause them problems. It is also very insightful for more seasoned runners who are currently not injured to just see how they are running and if anything should be worked on. Lets face it, very few of us have had any form of running technique coaching and we could all look to improve it!

If required, a much more detailed running assessment allows us to identify more subtle issues with your running, such as right to left side differences in forces and contact times, as well as other efficiency metrics is possible if needed. For this your running physiotherapist will apply foot pods to each foot and send you for an outdoor run. This gives us measured and accurate running data that we can target improvements in when it is relevant to your running injuries or efficiency needs.

We have no vested interest in advising or selling any footwear for running but can check your current footwear and make recommendations based on what we’re seeing with your running and also in relation to your running training and plans.

As part of this assessment you will be provided various resources from the assessment such as:

  • Slow Motion Videos pre and post running technique cues

  • Comparative Analysis Video of your running technique with and without coaching

  • Still images with relevant markings to highlight findings

  • RunScribe Pod Report PDF with your data if performed

What to Bring:

  • Your normal running shoes

  • A pair of running shorts/leggings. Please don’t wear black top and bottoms, it’s much better to have different colours and tight fitting clothing to see form and body alignment while running

  • If you use a running watch to collect running data, it would be helpful if you could familiarise yourself with your weekly mileage, running plan and cadence on easy paced runs. This is not absolutely necessary but will give us extra information that can be useful in the assessment and planning.
